Cochlear implant is a hearing device it is helpful for those who are partially or completely deaf. It is useful for young children as well as for adult people. Cochlear implant is also known as bionic air. Cochlear implant consist two major parts, the external plant is place behind the ear and the second part is surgically place under the skin by cochlear implant surger. The device is made of several parts, it have microphone that picks up the sound from the outer world, speech processor for managing sounds picked up by the microphone from environment, a transmitter and receiver/stimulator for converting signals received from speech processor into electric impulses and an electrode array made of 22 electrodes, it collects impulses from the stimulator and send it to different region of the auditory nerve. Hearing from cochlear implant is totally different from natural hearing; it only provides useful representation of sound and help deaf person to understand the speech.
Cochlear implant is very useful for children who are suffering from hearing problem. Children who are born deaf and receive the implant before the age of 2 year shows better result in comparison to children who receive the device at later age. This device is very useful for deaf children cochlear implant supported with post implantation therapy helps children in acquiring speech, language at social skill at better speed.
Cochlear implants are not a hearing device the working of cochlear implant is completely different from hearing aids, hearing aids amplifies the sound so that it can be detected by the ear. Whereas cochlear implant directly stimulates the auditory nerve, and the signals produced by implant are sent to brain, here it recognizes the signal as sound. With cochlear implant deaf people can recognize warning signals and can enjoy a conversation even on telephone as well as face to face.
An implant does not restore normal hearing. Instead, it can give a deaf person a useful representation of sounds in the environment and help him or her to understand speech.
